Hot Pepper

I attended a show this weekend, featuring three bands including Xiu Xiu, Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down, and one other band... sorry I can't remember the name.

I've been listening to Xiu Xiu's most recent album.  Jamie Stewart never fails to baffle me with his painfully honest and sometimes-pathetic lyrics.   During the show he pleaded with "hot pepper" to look at him.   Later he encouraged me to crush a pastry into my breast and then crush an ashtray into my breast.   Whatever the hell he's talking about it was oddly effective at making me feel  a little lonely.   I have some theories about what the "hot pepper" that he's reffering to may be.   My first thought is that maybe "hot pepper" is the name of a nightclub that he went to when he moved to a new city and had no friends yet.

I have no real reason to feel lonely though, and that's good.

One major dissapointment at the show was that they didn't play "Under Pressure."   Which, I thought, was a pretty cool song when I heard it on the album.  Micheal Gira seemed to help give Stewart some self assurance, which was refreshing.

Quick shout out to Daniel before I sign off.  Sorry I missed your skype call last night.  We should catch up I think.

Sick New Entry

I woke up sick this morning and decided to call off work.   I called in at 6:30 to tell them I was contagious and that I couldn't come in.  Unfortunately they asked me to wait and call back at 7:00 to see if my supervisor will ask me to come in till a relief person can come and... relieve me.

What's up?

Oh not too much.  Just living life with my brand spanking new wife Becky.  Things are pretty chill.  It's cool how we get along and how well we get things done.  We're both really excited about our future together.

Yeah, but what do you guys do for fun?

Well, just the other day, we went to the movie theater to see The Golden Compass!  Do you guys have any idea how excited I was for this movie?  I was pretty excited indeed!   But boy was I dissapointed.  I read the books, and yeah, I know what your thinking "Oh no, another know it all who 'read the books' and now the movie just won't compare".  Well think whatever you like, but the movie blows.  It took all the little cool parts in the story and scrambled them with shitty CG and paper thin characters.  Most characters don't even get a proper introduction, so you have no idea why we should even care.  The book does a great job of making characters feel necessary and important and interesting.  The movie just puts a famous actor there and you just 'know' they are gonna be in for whole movie, without any explaination.   Very frustrating.

Wow, well what about good stuff?  You know, stuff that you don't have some dumb criticism for?

Well... Becky and I got the full 3 box set of the board game "Settlers of Catan".  Yes, I know only geeks are supposed to play that game.  I suppose that makes Becky, myself and just about all the other cool people I know 'geeks'.   We played it a couple times with friends from our church community group.  I tell you, that game is like crack.   I can't get enough of those sheep, knights, roads, and settlements!   We're bringing the box to Clare's for Christmas this year.  It's gonna be a blast, hopefully Clare and Becky are up to it too.

You know what else is neat?  I found out that Becky had never seen any Indiana Jones films.  So over the last few weeks we watched all three.  Doesn't that seem crazy that someone twenty-something has not seen those movies?  I couldn't believe it, and neither could she when she saw how good the movies were.   Those films really take me back to my childhood days in like... 1st grade, watching with my Uncle Dave,  cousins Ryan, and Amy, and my bro and sis, Daniel and Clare, and my Dad.    We would get so excited about those movies.   I think Becky and I are gonna make those movies a part of our family collection.  I want my kids to experience those movies like I did, and not have to go back when they are 20 and be like... "I can't believe I never saw this before!"

Well, thanks for listening, my supervisor is pretty cool.  I just called him and he told me to stay home.  Peace out neighbors!

While we wait...

Hello, and welcome to the Weaver family update.

My wife Becky got really sick Wednesday morning at around 6:00 am.  It was very scary, and we had to go to the hospital, but she is doing just fine now.   We're working with her neurologist to find a medication that will work for her.   We're actually kind of glad it happened, because we've known something was up for the last few months but we didn't know what it was and the doctors were baffled as well.   Now we can finally get a diagnosis that will get Becky the treatment she needs.   Thankfully these things don't happen very often.

Other than medical stuff Becky and I are doing very well.   I have been waiting with not much patience for Pirates of the Burning Sea to be released.  Due to my (and Becky's to be fair) impatience, we decided to reactivate my World of Warcraft account.   I was reticent to do so, since I don't know many people from my old server and I would have to start a new character, though that can be fun.   I decided to create an undead warrior.  His name is Fissure and he's quite handsome if you ask me.  I recently gave him a shiny new battleaxe with which to fell his enemies.  Here's a picture for the curious among you.

And then Becky decided she would like to join the fun and created this blood elf paladin named Pyrenia.

While we can't play at the same time, but Becky's having fun learning and I'm enjoying the teaching process.  It's a first for Becky to actually enjoy playing WoW.    Hopefully she will take to being a pirate as much as she has to being a mythical creature weilding a elven broadsword.   Fun fun fun.

The Ghost of Tom Joad

I watched this movie recently with Becky.  Really interesting to learn a bit about the depression era.    This was a tough one for me to watch, particularly because of the mother character.  I couldn't help but see my mom.  Maybe that's true for everyone, but I found myself tearing up at several times during the movie particularly when she's throwing away her old pictures and a pair of earrings.

I finally understand what this song is talking about!

And The highway is alive tonight
Nobody's foolin' nobody as to where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the Ghost of Tom Joad
